Stage Direction · Vancouver · Canada & Europe
Director · Producer · Cultural Strategist
Cristiana Ripeanu is a stage director, producer, educator, and cultural strategist with over two decades of experience across Canada and Europe. Known for her precise, emotionally resonant, and politically aware work, she creates theatre that interrogates systems, invites complexity, and centres those historically left out.
Cristiana's practice blends intellectual rigor with deep empathy. She builds ensembles across difference, crafts inclusive rehearsal rooms, and leads with clarity, curiosity, and care. Whether working with text, devised work, or interdisciplinary forms, her approach is rooted in presence, collaboration, and the transformative power of storytelling.
Trained in both theatre direction and cultural management, she brings together artistic vision and organizational strategy. Her work spans directing, mentorship, and advocacy for underrepresented voices, especially immigrant and equity-deserving artists.
For Cristiana, theatre is a radical act of attention — a space to face the world more honestly, and to make room for all of us within it.
I believe the most powerful kind of directing is that which feels invisible — when the style arises organically from the material.
I direct theatre to ask questions of myself, my collaborators and of the world we live in. Each project begins with a subject that feels urgent, complex, and requires layered exploration. I choose texts that offer no easy answers, that demand rigour, depth and emotional clarity.
My work is driven by structure, metaphor, and collaborative investigation. I employ dramaturgical research, visual exploration, and psychological mapping of characters as a foundation for the creative process. I allow staging to emerge from the convergence of these elements, instead of forcing the play into a concept.
Stylistically, I believe in removing the distractions of excessive design and technology to focus on the deeper truth at the heart of the story. Set, design and props are minimalistic and essential — to invite the imagination of both performers and audiences into the storytelling.
My artistic sensibility was shaped by growing up under a system where theatre functioned as a coded language that sustained resistance, subversion, freedom of thought, and social liberation. That influence remains central to my work.
The quality of the acting and staging was so high — the play feels as fresh and relevant today as when it was written.
